KCD2 Part 2: Istvan Toth, Closed Churches, and a Terrible Sign

This is my second post as I meander my increasingly bummed way through Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. ------------ Istvan Toth Istvan Toth is a recurring character central to Henry's development, featuring in both Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel. In KCD2, the player learns that Toth has a deep bond with Erik, whom he raised from a young age. The narrative includes moments that suggest a potentially romantic dimension to their relationship, including a scene observed by Henry. When confronted, Toth provides his backstory with Erik (whom he groomed from childhood) and then engages Henry in a dialogue where he suggests they share similarities. This interaction occurs against the backdrop of Henry's own developing close relationship with Hans Capon. The game thus presents a complex relationship that some may interpret as crossing moral boundaries. The relative absence of critical analysis of this element within video game journalism and commentary is worth noting. Closed C...

Mixtape: Music as Marketing (and est licensing costs)

It's interesting to me that a "small" game like Mixtape had a soundtrack like it does but then I thought about the trade-off you might make with paying employees (and all the baggage that brings) as well as the music being more of a marketing expenditure. Google's Gemini analysis... For a "vibe-led" game like Mixtape, this trade-off is likely a deliberate choice. Instead of hiring 10 more developers to build a larger world or more complex systems, they "hired" The Cure, Iggy Pop, and Joy Division to do the heavy lifting of storytelling and marketing. In a crowded market, a smaller, more polished game with a "world-class soul" often stands out more than a larger, more technically complex game that lacks a clear identity. It’s the ultimate "work smarter, not harder" play for an indie studio. Estimated Budget Breakdown Based on 2026 industry standards and historical data for licensing hit songs, the total for 28 tracks likely fal...

Conan - The 2007 Video Game [REVIEW]

The 2007 Xbox 360 video game Conan is, to put it bluntly, not very good. In fact, a much better use of your time would be to watch ICECOLDSNAKE 's excellent retrospective review of it instead of playing it. So why, then, am I compelled to write about it? Because despite its many flaws, Conan embodies a specific, John Milius-esque approach to its world that deserves to be both celebrated and used . It's going to serve as a fascinating case study: a game that should, by all accounts, appeal to my personal sensibilities - the unapologetic "Milius" vibe - yet ultimately falls flat as a brown, boring mess of repetitive mechanics. In a world where review scores are becoming increasingly untethered from a game's actual quality, Conan offers a vital load test of my review structure . We've all seen it: a review that gives a game a perfect 10/10, only to spend the next thousand words detailing its shortcoming s. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a recent example where a g...
