007 First Light: A License To... Underwhelm?

I woke up this morning to the new 007 First Light trailer, and while the world seems
to be buzzing, I’m left feeling more disappointed than angry as a 50-year-old fan who
has lived through every iteration of Bond would. I expected more than what feels like a
generic action-adventure title. IO Interactive has a clean track record, but this trailer
feels like it’s missing the DNA of a true James Bond adventure.

The "Uncharted" Identity Crisis

The trailer opens with Bond lighting a torch, a trope we’ve seen ad nauseam with
Nathan Drake, Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones. It’s a blatant "borrowing" of influences that feels
beneath the character. Bond isn't a tomb raider; he’s a secret agent. If he’s lighting a
fire, it should be with a high-end lighter or a gadget, not a stick in a cave. It sets a tone
that feels "small" and derivative rather than iconic.

Style is Substance

In the world of 007, everything he wears matters. So, seeing a popped collar isn’t just
a nitpick, it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of the character’s silhouette. Bond is
the pinnacle of sartorial precision. Furthermore, the game suffers from what I call the
"Hitman Gloss." Using the Glacier engine, everything looks too polished and glossy,
lacking the texture variations and "lived-in" grit that a grounded origin story needs.

Scale and Naming

The title itself, 007 First Light, feels safe. Given the size of the modern gaming market,
the name "First Light," should be enough. The movies don't feel the need to over-explain;
they go big. This title feels small and corporate. We want the grandeur of the
franchise, not a title that sounds like a generic military shooter expansion.

A Glimmer of Hope

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. The trailer did successfully inject a bit of "sexy-
ness" back into the fold, an integral part of the Bond character that has been missed in the marketing of this adventure.

With the news of Lana Del Rey and David Arnold handling the music, there is hope
that the auditory soul of the game will remain intact even if the visuals are currently
leaning into cliches.

The Verdict: This is an origin story where Bond must "Earn the Number."
Perhaps the generic look is intentional, a rough diamond waiting to be polished.
But for now, I’m keeping my expectations as cold as a martini.
